    MANIKANDAR (PULI VAHANAM)

    Ayyappa is also commonly known as “Manikandan” because, according to the legend of his birth, his divine parents tied a golden bell (mani) around his neck (kandan) soon after his birth. As the legend goes, when Shiva and Mohini abandoned the baby on the banks of the Pampa river, King Rajashekhara, the childless monarch of Pandalam, found the newborn Ayyappa, accepted him as a divine gift, and adopted him as his own son.

What is the right way to pray when enters a temple?

1South Indian temples are built on the Agama style of architecture
  • First the way and rules to be followed in Hindu temples. These rules may or may not be applicable to North Indian temples as temples of North follows Nagara style of architecture while as South Indian temples are built on the Agama style of architecture where Vedic way of worship takes place and should be followed when visiting South Indian temples.

  • Before visiting a temple take a bath,wear good washed clothes(traditional dresses are good). It is obvious that you should remove your Slippers,Shoes,Sandals and what so ever outside the temple
2Dress Code - How to Enter

  • It is necessary that you can carry some Puja items like Coconut,Banana,Betel leaf,flowers,etc. As of simple even some few flowers can be taken. When you enter a temple first bow down before the Gopuram.
3Archanai - First Worship
  • If it is a Shiva temple,take Bilva or Vilva leaves,if it is a Vishnu(Perumal) temple, then Tulsi leaves can be taken for Archanai.

  • First God to be worshipped is Lord Ganapathi-the first and foremost god.it is very important to perform “Semi- Sit ups” atleast 3 times . It is also called as “Uthak-Baithak” in Hindi or in Tamil, “Thoppukaranam”(a super brain yoga).Ask for the forgiveness for your mistakes done by you in front of Vinayaka.
4Moolavar Worship - How many Times?
  • After worshipping Lord Ganesha,worship the main diety(Moolavar) of the temple.If abhishekam is going on ,see even the Alankaram of God and come out.Later go to all Sannidhis of various Gods and worship them all.(don’t forget to worship all gods).Don’t forget to worship Chakrathazhwar in Perumal temples and KalaBhairavar in Shiva temples.

  • If it is a Ganesha temple,circumbalate atleast once,Surya Narayana temple means atleast 2 times,for Lord Shiva its 3 times and for Vishnu and Devi(Amman or Goddess) temples its 4 times .In case of Hanuman circumbulation of atleast 5 times is obvious.Lastly circumbalate the Navagraha 9 times.
5Don't Talk - Don't Put Garbage
  • Depending upon the God in Garbhagruha,chant only the main diety name in the temple.Dont talk with others regarding unnecessary matters,you can talk about the stories of God.

  • Don’t litter or throw garbage in temple premises or else you will be subjected to the curse of gods.

  • Don’t take anything that belongs to the temple outside or to your home except Prasadam (You can take chandan,kumkum,broken coconut,flowers,Viboothi,prasadam).
6Final Things
  • In all the temples we have a pillar in front of the Garbhagudi or Moolasthanam(Karuvarai) known as Dwaja sthambam or Kodimaram or Balipeedam.Dwajasthambam or kodimaram is actually a stem of big tree and wrapped with the sheets made up of brass or copper or even gold.
  • Lastly after praying to all the gods,men should perform the Ashtanga namaskaram while women should perform the Panchanga namaskaram in front of Dwaja Sthambam.

  • Lastly sit for some time in temple in the temple premises and leave . Dont take non-veg after leaving the temple as it is said that God travels and accompanies with you to your home.
